How Do Children
Learn How To Read?

Learning to read is a specific process which consists of learning new knowledge and skills. Research shows that
learners benefit from explicit and step-by-step instruction when learning to read.

STEP 1 - Linking letters to sounds (Phonological Awareness and Phonics)

Module 1 of our Literacy Toolkit takes learners through each letter sound and introduces sight words. In this part, the child will practise gaining awareness of sounds in spoken words, and how to decode or 'sound out' printed letters. Then, they will learn Blending skills to be able to read words.

Module 1B comes with a set of 33 Decodable books which allow learners to practise their decoding and blending skills based on the letter sounds they learned in 1A.

Module 1A, 1B, and our Decodable books are suitable for younger learners who are just learning to read.

STEP 2 - Fluency

Fluency is the skill of reading smoothly and accurately. A reader must be fluent before he or she gains reading comprehension.

Module 2 contains short passages for learners to practise their reading fluency. By the end of Module 2, learners should be able to read simple texts fluently.

Module 2 is suitable for primary level children who can read basic words and want to build up confidence to read independently.

STEP 3 - Comprehension

With comprehension, children will enjoy reading, make connections between a text and their own lives, and learn from what they read.

These stories consist of colourful illustrations and culturally-relevant content which young learners will enjoy. Each storybook is accompanied by exercises for learners to practise their comprehension skills.
